August 2nd thru the 6th 11 Michigan Masters traveled to a very warm Sarasota Florida. The meet was held at the Shelby Aquatic Center home of the Sarasota Sharks. The temps hit 110 with the heat index but thankfully the water was chilled. Even with the big fans and covered seating, the heat was a challenge.
Swimming against 1,200 swimmers with a total of 35 records were broken this meet was a mix of fast and slower swims. Even though the meet was smaller, the 6th event was canceled. This was good as it helped the timeline, kept us off the deck for many hours and we only had one storm to navigate in the afternoons.
For our LMSC, 5 women, 6 men, 2 scratches and 2 unattached made up the Michigan contingent competing for Michigan. For the Michigan Masters team, we scored 207 points total which placed us 6th in the regional team division and of the 11 on our team, 4 only swam on Saturday. We were only able to field 2 relays and that was on Saturday due to the numbers. The Mixed Medley relay of Sallie Bartkowiak, Corrin Buck, Chad Steed and Robert Peel placed 9th and the Women’s relay of Sallie Bartkowiak, Julie Masters, Brita Brookes, and Corrin Buck placed 11th just out of scoring.
National champions were Cameron Peel in the 50 free and Corrin Buck in the 50, 100, 200 breast. Placing 2nd were Gaard Arneson 800 free, Chad Steed 50 breast and 200 fly, Patrick Sturdy 400 IM. Placing 3rd were Gaard Arneson 400 free and 200 back and Robert Peel 50 free.
Also scoring for the team, Mitzi Amelon with 15 points, Gaard Arneson 37 points, Sallie Bartkowiak 18 points, Corrin Buck 44 points, Julie Masters 15 points, Chad Steed 33 points and Patrick Sturdy 21 points. Also representing Michigan Masters, Brita Brookes in her first Nationals and Ken Mammo. Swimming unattached was Daniela Leal in her first Nationals and Andrew Sunde.
State Records broken at the meet were Gaard Arneson breaking the 800 free with a 12:50.99 and also the 400 free with a 6:16.70. Chad Steed broke the 50 breast record with a 33.62.
