Corrin Buck
Current Age Group: 60-64
Team you are a part of: For 29 years I was a part of the Battle Creek Y Masters and just recently MLAM of Holland MI
When did you start competitively swimming? I started my competitive swimming as an 8 and under on a pretty low-key but a super fun summer league team in Maryland. I continued to only swim summers and not until High School swim team during my junior year did I start swimming around on a USA team RMSC in Rockville Maryland.
How long have you been in Michigan Masters? I am an unusual Master swimmer who swam in college. Most Collegiate level swimmers get burned out and take time off. I was still very driven, so I joined the Pennsylvania Master’s team in 1987 right out of college. I moved to Michigan in 1988 and joined the Michigan Masters. I have been a member for 35 years minus 2 years that I moved back to Maryland and swam on attached there.
What is your favorite swim event/race? I am mostly known for my breaststrokes and IMs. (I divorced the 400 IM in 2011 haha!) I put the most stock in my 100 breaststroke but I am probably best at the 200 breast.
So far, what was your favorite Masters Swim Meet? I have been blessed with many opportunities to race at NCAA’s, Worlds, Nationals, State Meets and local meets. There has been so many amazing experiences, but I think the one that bubbles to the top is Worlds in Montreal in 2014. I went to the meet very intimidated and at Opening Ceremonies the women’s USA Water Polo team came in with their gold medals and I was Starstruck. I wanted one of those! The venue was very challenging, long course is not my strong suit and when I won the 100 breast I was on the moon! I later that week won the 200 breaststroke as well.
What is your favorite set? I would say my favorite test set is 8×50 on 1:00, 6×50 on 1:10, 4×50 on 1:20, 2×50 on 1:30 all breaststroke with a 100 recovery between and working on my 200 pace in the beginning and getting faster each cycle so I am working on speed. I also enjoy 20×50 but I usually do this freestyle where you go 1 fast 4 pretty, 2 fast 3 pretty, 3 fast 2 pretty and 4 fast 1 pretty. If I need to work a little bit of everything, I like the fours set. 4×100 freestyle, 4×75 IM, 4x50s breaststroke, 4×25 Sprint.
What is something you need to improve or constantly working on in the pool? Recently I have been focused on my freestyle because I am not pleased with my times lately. My Mantra is always Get Slower Slower…. however, my freestyle has gotten quite slow! In the breaststrokes, I am often working on finishing stronger as I’m not happy with my last split lately. I also need to work on strength outside of the pool and adding weight training.
What are your big swim goal(s)? Stay healthy as last season I had 2 major setbacks where I was out of the water for a stent. I am excited because I age up to on November 1st so I’m focused on chasing some more records in this age group. At Canadian Nationals, I achieved one of my goals which was to break a National Record in the short course meters for the 50 breast and 100 breast. I really surprised myself in the 100 breast at Indy so I would like to see if I can pop another 1:12!
Favorite swim Olympian? I have a couple and for different reasons. I’m very impressed with Caleb Dressel for his dive to his breakouts and his studliness. Lydia Jacoby for her history of being a “nobody” in Alaska to an Olympic Champion, and I can relate to her breaststroke style and lastly Kate Douglas because her 200 breaststroke is poetry in motion. She is absolutely a beast.
What do you like to do outside the pool? Since moving to Holland this summer, I am loving living 5 minutes to Lake Michigan. I love anything in and around water, I enjoy boating, paddle boarding, body surfing and open water. I enjoy golfing with my husband and friends. I love spending time with my family, and I read a lot of books!
